HBO Now Standalone App Launches Exclusively with Apple

hboApple

First up at the Apple Event this morning was Tim Cook introducing the addition of HBO Now to their Apple TV line-up. While that news may not be unexpected, learning HBO Now will only be available for iOS based devices and Apple TV (at least at launch time) was a bit surprising. Good news for those of you with Apple TV, an iPad, or an iPhone –less so for those carrying an Android-based device.

A few other details were also announced, including confirmation of the $14.99 per month price-tag (with your first month free).

For those of you relieved to have a standalone way to watch Game of Thrones, have no fear –you can subscribe prior to the launch of season 5 on April 12. To whet your appetite, the CEO of HBO was on-hand at the launch event to preview a special new trailer for the popular series (which I have to admit, made it even harder to wait these next few weeks until it starts up again).

Is HBO making a mistake giving Apple exclusive rights (initially) to their new standalone subscription service? Will Android-loyalists forgive them, or are they losing would-be subscribers forever?
