| Amazon and Harpercollins are trying to renegotiate their contract for print and digital books. They have been in talks since late 2014 and apparently HarperCollins is not happy with the new terms. We have it on good authority that in the very near future HC is going not going to have their content listed on Amazon and digital readers will have to look elsewhere. Where can users purchase bestselling e-books such as American Sniper, Girl In A Band or Yes Please? If you live in the United States or the United Kingdom the Barnes and Noble Nook store will have them available. Kobo also has all of the new e-books as well, but they also have a larger international footprint. If you are the type of person that would subscribe to an e-book subscription websites such as Entittle, Scribd and Oyster you are in luck. They all have HarperCollins e-books available, but they are primarily older titles. I am sure we all remember the very public contract dispute between Hachette and Amazon. For over six months every major newspaper in the world reported on it and even TV personalities such as Stephen Colbert got in on the action. The one big problem Hachette faced, was that Amazon accounted for a large portion of their sales and did not have much of a viable alternative. In October 2013 HarperCollins started selling books, e-books and audiobooks directly on their website. This is the first time a major publisher has developed proper infrastructure to bypass traditional booksellers. The vast majority of their digital titles are only available to read via the HarperCollins Reader App for Android and iOS. Select titles are actually available in DRM-Free MOBI, which is a format that is compatible with Kindle e-readers. You might be wondering to yourself, how is a major publisher offering e-books that do not have Adobe Digital Rights Management? In late 2014 HC signed a relationship with Digimarc in order to have watermark technology embedded into the e-books it sells. Digital watermarking technology caught on a few years ago when the entire Harry Potter eBook collection adopted it, instead of going the traditional DRM route. The primarily benefit is that there is no barriers preventing users from loading their books on as many devices as they want. So if the rumors are true and HarperCollins will be ceasing selling content on Amazon, until more favorable terms are offered, they will continue to make money. Readers will still have many options to read the publishers e-books and the world will go on. Where can you Buy HarperCollins eBooks other Than Amazon? is a post from: Good e-Reader |

Video Review – Onyx Boox i86
| The Onyx Boox i86 is only available in China and it should be hitting Europe and North America later this year. This eight inch e-reader features Google Android and users can install apps via Google Play. The Onyx i86 HD features an eight inch IR touchscreen with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 with 250 PPI. It does not have a front light like most contemporary e-readers which helps keep the cost down. Underneath the hood is a 1 GHZ single core processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage. There is compatibility for an Micro SD, so you can easily enhance it further up to 32 GB. I think the two thing users will appreciate is the fact this reader can listen to audiobooks and music via the 3.5mm headphone jack and could even hook up wireless speakers via Bluetooth. The eight inch screen is also appealing because there is a large segment of users that demand more screen real estate.

What Nielsen Can Tell Indie Authors
|
If authors keep up with the information reflected in the Author Earnings reports by Hugh Howey and crew, then they’ll see a picture of how much authors are actually earning across different platforms, genres, and more. But the Nielsen data shows a year-end picture of how different formats stacked up, as well as where consumers are buying books, not just by brand name of retailers, but by market type, too. The data for 2014 is in, and it showed a noticeable increase in ebook buying habits where new titles where concerned. This goes a little against the grain of an industry that for a long time has released new titles–especially expected bestsellers–first in hardcover, then paperback, then audio, then any other possible options. Ebooks were a slowly adopted format when e-readers first came on the scene, but that is shifting as publishers recognize the substantial sales dollars that come from the lower-priced and easier accessed format. One of the very telling aspects of the report was where books are actually being purchased. With all of the concern on the part of self-published authors about not being readily included in bookstores and libraries, the data shows that’s simply not where readers are finding content. The majority of book sales are happening through online retailers, followed closely behind by major chain bookstores like Barnes and Noble (which has a website and has an agreement through BookBaby to stock self-published titles on its website). Yet some authors are still so concerned about wanting their books in brick-and-mortar bookstores, demonstrating the fact that they may know very little about the current retail climate. One of the chief goals of the Author Earnings initiative has been to disseminate information just like this in order to help authors of every avenue make informed decisions about their careers. This glimpse into the bookselling realm will hopefully keep authors, publishers, and book retailers up to date on how books reach readers’ hands.

Hachette Boss Says e-Book Subscription Sites are Not Viable
| Arnaud Nourry, the CEO of Hachette said in a recent interview that e-book subscription services have no future. He was referencing the dirge of websites that have opened in the last few years, such as Scribd, Oyster and Entitle. In a recent interview with the Bookseller, Arnaud said “We now have an ecosystem that works. This is why I have resisted the subscription system, which is a flawed idea even though it proliferates in the music business. Offering subscriptions at a monthly fee that is lower than the price of one book is absurd. For the consumer, it makes no sense. People who read two or three books a month represent an infinitesimal minority.” Penguin Random House’s CEO Tom Weldon echoed Arnaud’s sentiments at the Futurebook conference a little awhile ago in the UK. “We have two problems with subscription. We are not convinced it is what readers want. ‘Eat everything you can’ isn’t a reader’s mindset. In music or film you might want 10,000 songs or films, but I don’t think you want 10,000 books.” Many of the top publishers that have bought into the whole e-book subscription model have expressed trepidation about including their modern bestsellers. Companies like Macmillan have recently opened up their catalog of titles and started doing business with some of the leading sites, but they did it with older books. Readers will likely never find a current New York Times bestseller on a site like Scribd. I don’t think e-book subscription websites are a viable business model. The main problem is that these services are not profitable on their own and they rely on venture capital in order to keep the lights on. Scribd has raised $42 million dollars since 2007 and Oyster has attained $14 million dollars in the last year and a half. e-book subscription websites are a relatively new segment of the market and most top publishers have not bought into the concept yet. Those who do, have done it in a very limited fashion with their backlist. Instead, most just rely on Amazon to push their digital sales since the Seattle company controls 75% of the North American market and 95% in the United Kingdom. Top 5 New Anime for April 2015
| There are certain times of year when new anime arrives in hordes, and April is one of those times. And sometimes it can be hard to weed through the slew of new shows and find the ones worth watching. The following is a list of the top five most promising new series, whether by the based material or just the great premise of the plot. For the purposes of this list, we’ve excluded second seasons and limited the list to brand new series. 5. Food Wars/Shokugeki no Sōma It isn’t uncommon for manga serialised in Weekly Shōnen Jump to get an anime adaption. Although cooking doesn’t immediately spring to mind when thinking of high stakes shōnen anime, but Food Wars never fails to deliver. It follows the protagonist as he attends an elite cooking school where only 10% of the students graduate. If you’re a fan of culinary TV like MasterChef, this is one anime you won’t want to miss. 4. Battle Spirits Burning Soul Bandai’s popular card game, Battle Spirits, has already had it’s share of anime series. Burning Soul, however, is unique and has a different story from its predecessors. TV series based on merchandise have been a staple in our culture for as long as anyone can remember, and never seems to go out of style. If you’re looking for some of that good old-fashioned Saturday morning charm, this is the anime to watch. 3. Kyōkai no Rinne This anime promises a flair for the supernatural. With an art style similar to InuYasha, the story follows Sakura, a girl who can see ghosts after she was pulled into the other side as a child. When she reaches high school, Sakura decides to rid herself of these abilities with the help of a young shinigami. A bit of action, a bit of romance, and a lot of ghosts, the 2009 manga has a retro feel to it, and the anime promises just the same amount of fun. 2. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Look at that title. If there were ever a series to instantly catch a person’s attention, this would be it. In a world where adventurers seek out fame and fortune in the Dungeon. However, one young man named Bell goes in, not to win fortune, or glory, but to simply pick up a girl. Great reasoning! The series also takes n interesting mythological spin by having adventurers belong to a Famili, led by a certain god. The main character is the only Familia member of Hestia, going up against other mythological favourites like Loki and Freya. There’s a lot to love about this premise, and everyone should give it a go! 1. Vampire Holmes This anime is not actually based on a manga or novel, but a smartphone game. The story follows a private detective in London, who always catches his criminal. His job takes a new description when he takes on a secret mission from the Metropolitan Police – chasing after vampires. While the smartphone game certainly roused enough interest to warrant the anime, at the end of the day, . I mean, it’s about a vampire hunter in London who goes by the name Holmes. What more can you ask for? Top 5 New Anime for April 2015 is a post from: Good e-Reader |

Amazon Turns Your House Into A Shopping Cart
| It doesn’t seem to matter how many lists I make, or where exactly I store them, somehow I always end up going to the store and forgetting half of the items I went there for. Amazon gets it (and they would also like to get your business). To that end, the online retail giant has created the Dash Button: a small plastic button, complete with reusable adhesive and a hook, that can be strategically placed near to the important products in your home that require frequent replenishment. As long as you hold a valid Amazon Prime membership, configuring Dash Buttons only requires that you have the Amazon app on your smartphone (connected to your home Wi-Fi network). Once set-up, a single button press will place your order (with an alert sent to your smartphone that can be cancelled if you happen to change your mind). Fortunately, a built in fail-safe will allow you to cancel your order if you change your mind (and will only respond to the first button press until the first order arrives –so there is no need to worry that more than one member of your family will notice that you are running low on toilet paper). As an added bonus, Amazon has also opened this service up to developers so dash button technology can be integrated into other hardware and software solutions going forward (think: coffee pots that auto-magically order their own coffee and filters as required). Over 250 household items are already on board. Watch the promo video (linked below) to learn more. It may be lazy and even slightly ridiculous, but it also promises to make my life easier.

A Massive Study to Understand E-Reading Starts in Europe Next Week
| The European Commission is funding a new study to understand reading comprehension when it comes to reading digital content, such as e-Books. It starts next week and will be ongoing until until 2017. This is poised to be the most comprehensive research report ever attempted. The research is being conducted by EU READ, which is a consortium of European reading promotion organisations. The members who belong to the organization makeup scientific and research institutions located in Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria,Portugal, Stavanger, and Norway. EU Read is basically just a collective body of people who want to understand, on a fundamental level, how digital reading influences cognition and retention. This warrants a strong scientific body who can run tests on students and then liaison with publishers for their own data and to conduct broad studies. Likely it won’t be until 2018 before we start to see data start coming from this massive study. Publishers all over the world are going to be interested in their findings because it could have reverberating effects on everything from the way e-book reading apps are constructed to the actual e-book format itself. What Digital Format Do you Enjoy the Most?
| There are a multitude of digital formats that people read via apps or online. From e-books to digital magazines, there is no shortage of content that is made available via publishers. What is your favorite digital format? Today, we take a look at the results of a poll we have an over the course of the last two weeks. 229 people took part in our latest poll and we basically asked the question “What Digital Format Do you Enjoy the Most?” The number one result was e-books which captured 65% of the vote, solidifying that the digital novel is here to stay. The second most prolific digital format is television and movies which garnered 13% of the vote. This demonstrates that digital streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Chruncyroll remain on the upswing. In the third position is fan-fiction which 6.11% of the voting population noted as their favorite digital format. This makes sense because every month billions of pages are read on services such as Wattpad and Kindle Worlds. What surprised me was that digital magazines and newspapers did so poorly and clearly did not resonate with the Good e-Reader audience. These two categories combined had 5% of the vote. Clearly, with newspapers there is a lack of interest in reading the replica edition or utilizing apps to stay informed of the latest news and likely people have switched to aggregation services such as Google News, News 360 and LinkedIn Pulse. Digital magazines actually fared the worst in our research. Are companies doing it wrong? Are people using services such as Zinio, Pressreader, Magzter or Next Issue for access to unlimited content? I think people are still just buying the print edition and have not switched to digital like people who read e-books. What Digital Format Do you Enjoy the Most? is a post from: Good e-Reader |

Sony DPT-S1 PDF Reader Now $200 Cheaper

Your Photo on a t-shirt from Rapanui
| Ben: Last week while scouring the web for projects and articles for Pi Weekly, my Friday Raspberry Pi email round-up, I came across Rapanui, who were using a Raspberry Pi to provide a rather unique service: you tweet a picture to @tshirtplease and it automatically creates a product page for you and others to buy a t-shirt with that picture on it. I immediately contacted them for more information and Mart offered to write it up for us! Over to Mart… Rapanui is a fashion brand that makes clothes from more sustainable materials in a wind powered factory. To keep our prices down, we do a lot of automation and digital systems. The internet of things inspired us as a vision for the future of fashion – so over the past year or so we have been developing ways for other people to connect to our factory on the Isle of Wight. Our idea was – what if a whole factory could be plugged into the IoT and anyone (or any thing!) could connect to it to get clothes made. Recently, we have refined and packaged that service as a public API that app / web developers can integrate into their projects. It's free to use: An app can send through an image, and we'll reply with a link to buy that image on a t-shirt. Many of our jobs are created through apprenticeships or vocational training. Sometimes IT projects can take months and it's hard for new apprentices to see the light at the end of the tunnel! We wanted to launch a fun, fast project for our apprentices to get results, learn from and build confidence. Around the same time as launching the service, we had an interesting meeting with @andysc who works at IBM. He introduced us to Node-RED and gave us a lot of helpful pointers. We'd heard about Raspberry Pi but hadn't committed to trying it as we normally work with web based PHP type coding, and it seemed a bit alien to us. Andy invited us along to the Blackgang Chine Pi Jam, so we let one of our web developers out for the day and amazingly, he came back with a Raspi guitar pedal and an expertise in robotic dinosaurs… We immediately purchased a bunch of Raspberry Pis, soldering irons and accessories and put aside some time. Our idea was to see if we could connect a Raspberry Pi to our factory API via twitter. The result in a surprisingly fast 10 hours is @tshirtplease – a twitter account that is connected to a Raspberry Pi which is sat in our IT office running Node-RED around the clock. It uses the Twitter API to find all mentions of @tshirtplease. If a tweet has an image attached, we make a call to the Rapanui API which returns a link. The URL loads a product: Their image on a t-shirt. People can share that product, or buy it if they like it. @tshirtplease also accepts certain hashtags as options. For example #womens returns the image on a women's top (instead of the default unisex t-shirt). #edit is cool – It returns a link to our studio where they can tweak their design a bit. For us, previously spectators of the Raspi community, actually trying it has exceeded our expectations. Yes it was fun, educational and interesting. But what was surprising was the speed with which we got through it thanks to Node-Red, and the potential for genuine manufacturing applications. We now have more Raspi projects running various operations around our factory collecting and processing data. We're only just getting started on our journey with Raspberry Pi. I would suggest to anyone who is interested but hasn't tried it – get one! Get node red. And get stuck in. Update: Some meta recursion going on now…

HarperCollins e-Books will no Longer be Available on Amazon
| HarperCollins is one of the largest publishers in the world and they might soon be pulling all of their e-books and print titles from Amazon. The contract between these two companies is set to expire soon and HC is refusing to sign the new deal. The contract presented to HarperCollins was the same contract recently signed by Simon & Schuster, Hachette, and Macmillan, Amazon confirmed. It is very risky to not sign a new deal with Amazon, since the Seattle company controls 75% of the digital book market in North America and 95% of the United Kingdom. I think HarperCollins may want the same publicity that Hachette got when their six month contract with Amazon dominated headlines and permeated into popular culture. Likely the lack of HarperCollins e-books on Amazon will drive readers to their own website where they sell e-books. They established it in 2013 and sought to have some measure of control over their own titles. Most people are unaware they can buy them from the publisher directly and they might bring their business to companies such as Barnes and Noble and Kobo. In addition, Entitle, Oyster and Scribd, three of the leading Netflix for e-books websites may get an influx of paid subscriptions.

Best Buy Marketplace Coming to Canada
| The Best Buy Marketplace launched in the United States in 2011 and was designed to compete against Amazon. Unlike eBay where anyone can list anything, the Marketplace is chiefly for companies looking to sell their wares. The service is poised to expand to Canada in the coming weeks and Canadian tech companies will be able to list their commercial electronics. Third-party sellers on the Canadian version of the Best Buy Marketplace will handle product shipping and returns. Customers will use the same single shopping cart and checkout process. One of the big reasons why the Best Buy Marketplace is launching in Canada is primarily attributed to the elimination of the Future Shop brand. 66 Future Shop stores are closing and 65 will be converted to Best Buy. As a result of this consolidation, approximately 500 full-time and 1,000 part-time positions will be eliminated. Everything is now under the Best Buy banner and its easier to promote and market a singular online marketplace. We have heard from sources within Best Buy that the preliminary groundwork is all laid out and it should be launching in the next few weeks. Digital Audiobook Usage on the Rise in Canada
| In 2007 a paltry 3,073 audiobook titles were produced and this figure rose exponentially to over 12,000 published in 2011. In 2013 many industry experts proclaimed that over 20,000 audiobooks were now available and in 2014 over 35,000 were released by major publishers and companies like Audible. The global audiobook industry is currently worth 2.6 billion dollars and part of the reason why we have seen a dramatic increase in profitability is due to digital. In a recent New York Times piece, they said "In the first eight months of 2014, sales were up 28% over the same period last year, far outstripping the growth of e-books, which rose 6%" The audiobook industry in the US and UK are fairly well documented, but Canada tends get lost in the shuffle. Booknet Canada seeks to remedy this situation with a comprehensive report on digital usage. Apparently 76% of Canadians only listen to the digital audiobook format and women account for 57% of the audience. Many audiobook users are actually purchasing the digital edition after they have read the print or e-book variant. 36% of the respondents stated that they generally read first and listen second. Meanwhile the majority of the respondents stated they want to see more bundling with the e-book and audiobook format. I won’t bore you with a summary of the 22 page report, but what I found that was the most interesting was how Canadian libraries are starting to see massive digital usage. Most of the big libraries in Canada have seen a 50% increase year on year in audiobook loans. Overdrive, likely the largest content provider indicated downloads have increased 38% in 2014, outpacing the 32% increase in eBook downloads. Magzter Digital Magazine App Adds New Titles to Unlimited Subscription Plan
|
Unlike heavier platforms that can really only provide value to consumers through deals with libraries or other businesses that wish to offer content, Magzter GOLD is built and priced with the individual subscriber in mind. That’s why it’s $9.99-a-month plan, similar in price to all-you-can-read ebook subscription services, offers unlimited access to its catalog of over 5,000 magazines, comic books, and ebooks. "Since launching Magzter GOLD in late-January, we've seen a threefold increase in the number of magazines and pages read, and a similar increase in overall user engagement," said Girish Ramdas, CEO & Co-Founder of Magzter, in a press release. "Publishers are quickly taking note of these impressive metrics as the 'all-you-can-read' model proves capable of delivering a substantial ROI. We're thrilled to welcome major titles and publishers like American Media Inc., Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Entrepreneur and The Atlantic, and we look forward to entering additional publisher partnerships as we continue to expand our offering throughout the year." “With over 25 million users worldwide, we offer unmatched global scale for publishers and they continue to sign on,” added Vijay Radhakrishnan, President & Co-Founder of Magzter. “The ‘all-you-can-eat’ model is an increasingly popular format for all media, from movies to music, and magazine publishers can’t ignore the demand. With our userbase, technology and content, we expect even more to join our newsstand in the coming weeks.” One thing that content distributors learned early on about digital subscriptions is that eventually consumers can start to question the usefulness of the platform. Whereas unlimited magazine subscriptions make sense in terms of the quick consumption of the issue, ebook subscribers felt the pinch of paying for a service and then not having time to truly take advantage of the unlimited nature of it. Magzter GOLD launched with this obstacle in mind, and therefore also offers a “lite” subscription at only $4.99 a month, which allows subscribers to have unlimited access to only five titles of their choosing.
